Kuwaiti Workaholic

What constitutes a Kuwaiti Workaholic?
These random points may indicate your situation to whether being one or not
  • You show up to work on TIME
  • Actually show up to work ;)
  • You punch your own attendance card to work
  • You don’t bring a newspaper or breakfast to work
  • You don’t search for a newspaper or breakfast at work
  • You have work to do
  • You understand the work you have to do
  • You do the job yourself (أدري قوية)
  • It’s easier when you’re around than when you’re not (تقزة قوية)
  • Your main concern is to solve a problem not to place the blame
  • You actually thought about developing your working environment (innocent mistake)
  • You’re restless
  • You’re considered socially retarded
  • You don’t leave work before the end of working hours
Our definition of being a workaholic here in Kuwait differs from the rest of the world. The simple fact that you actually lift a finger and do your job makes you one of the rare active working-force in Kuwaiti society ;) (صح ولا أنا غلطانة)

They maybe many other indicators that I have missed, you’re welcome to share ;D

My Little Angel

I look at the beautiful picture of you and me
You in orange and me in blue
In an outfit, ofcourse, you chose for me
Striking unfamiliar poses to the both of us just to play along until the shutter clicks
Happy smiles and girlish giggles are drawn from within our souls
Standing next to you is so comfortable wishing our picture comes out beautiful
If it could represent our true relationship
This picture of you and me … will be of a single loving entity
My nickname to you was unique
Only for me to use initially
To call you out from within a crowd
So you would know it’s me you heard
But now it is so popular
Almost everyone you know uses this exact name formula
Not long ago you found your man
And for quite a while I felt alone
Realizing you found the one and seeing your eyes glimmer with love
The way you talk, laugh and touch
My heart flutters with joy for your happiness
Just as it did, when I saw you coming down the stairs
Beautifully dressed with this nervous smile on your ‘miljah’ day
I stood in the corner … heavily breathing with my face way up high
To stop the tears from slipping away from my eyes
You reminded me of the young girl you once were
To me you’re still the same, a little girl
In the playground running towards me scared of a naughty boy
We have come so far together
From being strangers to being one another
We fight, shout and make amends
We have our laughs and cries
We share our own secrets and jokes
We wear each others clothes
I know your friends and I love the best you chose
You both share secrets from me they are concealed
But in the end I know for sure
In your life I have a special place that is mine alone and more
All I have is yours for the taking
I stare at the picture with one thought in mind
To me you’ll always remain my one of a kind …. baby sis :*

Happy 1 year anniversary … Insha’Allah you’ll have more happy ones to come :D
Love you fa6foo6

Another Day @ work

Today I actually played around with an iphone. It is soooo cooool in person ;) He wanted to configure it on our wireless network for testing purposes. He is so nice to me. He lets me try out all the new stuff he buys :D The other day, he had this GPS&then showed me how to map the points taken to Google earth. We used it to layout the fiber network infrastructure. I wish we had a separate large budget so we can buy all the new workstations/gadgets/softwares/etc out there to destroy play around with.

pcs

An employee came to my office today to configure his new MAC laptop. Now am looking at my HP laptop, which is customized/upgraded so i can tolerate it, sighing to myself not impressed at all by it. I need a new cool gadget *eyes tearing*

You would think they would provide one for the IT!!! Am I asking too much? Don’t think so :D Maybe my new work place wouldn’t find this as a huge demand request ;P

Six weeks sober & going

I have been sober for about six weeks. No tea, coffee or soda. I mostly miss my morning green tea & my occasionally cold sprite.

I went to donate blood after they have given some to our sick maid. I have iron deficiency. WTH, I told the nurse I just had my breakfast. I hate having breakfast!!! She did the test again, negative can’t donate blood. So off to Googling & I found what things I need to eat or stay away from to increase the iron level in my blood. “Liver is one concentrated source of iron“, I drew the line here, HELL NO. After two weeks of eating vegi’s & avoiding the above, still I can’t donate blood.

Here I am after six weeks, yearning for a cold sprite. I want to look at the sunset or the sunrise, which ever the hell is available at the time, and drink the cold crystal clear shimmering full of gases liquid, let it tingle my tongue all the way down to my ever so welcoming stomach. Straight out of the can or in a beautiful cup topped with a slice of lemon. To savour the taste I’ll drink it alone, no food nothing just me and my sprite. I guess fasting didn’t help cramp in these cravings. I want to hold my hot cup of green tea in a slightly cold room snuggling on the sofa to drink it. Till that moment comes, I’ll stick to my boycott in hopes of a high level of iron in my blood ;)

Heros – Season 1

Out of my morning mood and back to my usual self in my bed with new bed sheets&new pillow covers ;)

Villains. WTH is up with Villains & long speeches.

I finished HEROS. It is a nice series about people with supernatural powers coming together to save New York from a nuclear explosion.

Throughout the series there are so many flaws. If you haven’t seen it, continuing reading this might spoil it for you, you’ve been warned. Jump directly to the conclusion ;)

One of the characters, Hiro, is from Japan with his friend Indo. He can bend time&space. Travel in time. One amazing thing that he becomes a samurai if I can say that or learns how to handle a sword in a matter of hours!!!

There is another guy called the Hashen, around him no one can use his power. Hashen, the neutralizer. Add to it he’s French&black :P

The bad guy Syler, well he sucks other people’s power by slicing their brain open.

Peter is the main character, he absorbs the power of others if they come close. So when Ted the nuclear human bomb meets with him, Peter adds nuclear bomb generation to his list of powers. Peter is the one who is going to explode because he can’t control this new power. Sylar also kills Ted&takes his power yet amazingly he can control it.

Anyway so many times they could’ve killed Sylar but noooo … they have to give THE SPEECH.

“You killed my father. Destroyed his name&now you must die”

That’s professor Suresh while taking spinal fluid from Sylar’s neck. First of all I thought they took it from the lower back&really does a person have to be alive while doing that. Of course Sylar escaped.

The stupid painter can see the future. He sees him self being murdered by Sylar, himself lying on the floor with an open skull. After this scene what does he do? He paints how to kill Sylar&waits for the guy. Sylar kills him&takes his powers. Stupid junkie. If I were him&I would’ve painted the future&shot myself. At least this way he wouldn’t be able to take my powers.

Then when Sylar wants to kill the good guy, he has enormous powers yet he chooses to suffocate his victim, oh come on, at least break it!!! So while suffocating Peter Hiro comes&stabs him. Of course Sylar doesn’t miss his chance of giving THE SPEECH. Eventually they leave you with this scene where supposedly dead Sylar has crawled to the sewers.

I mean if it were up to me, i would have dragged the Hashen kicking&Screaming to the place where all the good guys&one bad guy meet. Then have a special squad waiting. I will instruct 30 something snippers to shoot the bastard aka Sylar. Crash a car through him. Maybe a helicopter too. A mini missle ;) Then make sure he’s dead

I’ve skipped a lot you should see the series, i didn’t want to spoil it, they are now starting season 2. It is very nice and capturing.

So what have we learned…

Never go alone tracking a villain if you can help it. Get all the help you need. Don’t be a martyr, people die all the time

Please we live in a sick world. So if you are fighting evil don’t trust strangers, you would think that is obvious!

Always double check

Never ever give a speech before killing anyone. Once you got the chance shoot, then think

When finally killing a villain, make sure he’s DEAD. Just because he fell&closed his eyes doesn’t mean he’s actually lifeless. Once he falls whatever you have use it. If it’s a machine gun, a pistol, just empty that damn thing, every single bullet, preferably in the head or through the heart. I would go the extra mile&chop the head off and the heart and throw them into different places. I might feed the rest of him to the dogs or any animal that eats meat.

Never ever think it’s over ;)

Before futoor nap time, gtg :D

Mornings like these

Don’t you just wake up one morning and know this isn’t your day.
Today is this day for me …

Malee khilq …

At work I just stare at the computer, a 15 minute job takes hours. Don’t know the cause

Hated getting out of bed this morning
Hated driving my brother to school, I wanted to drop him off @ the beginning of fifth ring road if I could even though he was all dressed up and finished on time
The empty tank signal flashed in my car this morning
I have a headache
I need a massage

I’m bored&tired
I want Ramadan to end
I don’t want the year to end
I’m over thinking
I need to go to the bank. I need to get our photos
I have too much to do and so little time and yet I don’t seem able to lift a finger
I’m starting to forget a lot. I’m having a hard time remembering stuff
I don’t feel feminine
I need new sheets & pillows. I need to sleep
I want to spend a full day infront of the TV doing nothing&not feel guilty about it
I want a holiday. I want to travel. I want to see the world.
I want peace. I want happiness. I want to be content.

I’m being selfish&self-centered. It just isn’t my day

How hard is it to FLUSH

Flush … Flush … Flush

All the pretty pretty girls @ work are Nasty!!!

Every morning when I arrive to work & I’m always early, the bathrooms are just cleaned so I take advantage of that & go do my business.

I walk into the bathroom & this awful smell. I go to my usual loo & BAM!!! Honestly I jumped a little. People after doing your thing FLUSH damn it especially if you’ve done no. 2. “والله للحين لايعة جبدي” Thank god I’m fasting or I would have vomited my breakfast. “لا واللي زاد الطين بلة” the other one wasn’t flushed either, but ar7am somebody only leaked. I flushed it … eklaaab.

How hard is it to flush, just press the button. We should have those toilets where when you get up, it is automatically flushed.

If (person.action != flush) {
System.print(“$%&*#@ & beat the crap out of him/her”);
ToiletDoor.SmashHead(input person);
ToiletDoor.Kickout(input person);
}
Else{
System.print(“Thank you”);
ToiletDoor.close();
}

I need some water after this shock !!!

Websense

websense
If you are an IT you’ll know by now it is a huge hassle to try and control the users. Protest everywhere!! They think your job solely revolves around making sure the MSN messenger is working. Anyway that is another topic.

I needed to monitor the Internet activities of our precious users. It is an easy to install application, though if you read their manuals you’ll go crazy. Too much information. I really hate doing that, especially when I am intrigued with all the features and I have to go through stack of manuals. Enter their website, choose a local partner. They can send you a demo CD or it can be downloaded from the main site. Then you register for a 1 month trial key. After I finished setting up, I called a local partner regarding some inquires, I discovered they can come and install the whole thing for you!! There are different components and different setups. All Websense components can be installed on one server or distributed, again depends on the size of your organization. Remember they offer many features and products but I only tested their web filtering feature.

Since we don’t have the proper equipment to test we had to work around that. I found a DELL desktop. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB. The processor is Intel Pentium 4 (2.4 GHz), I know (o_o) remember work around. The Hard Disk space was 40 GB by the end of 3 weeks period it ran out of free space. It depends on your organization and the load of your traffic. Formatted the PC and installed a Windows Server 2003 Edition OS. You can use others, but this is what we have the license to, plus I am more familiar with Windows OS. Installed Microsoft Database engine MSDN because it’s free ;)

It’s beautiful easy to use software. You organization network structure dictates the deployment on Websense. You want to do minimal changes. So if your switches support port mirroring you can go this way. Configure your switch to mirror all traffic going to your network’s gateway to another port and connect Websense server to that port. If Websebse server goes down it won’t affect your network’s functionality. In Websense you have to set the network interface you want to monitor, of course start by one. Another thing, if you don’t have active directory (AD) don’t worry. Just specify the range of you whole network IP. You can segment if you want, this is a nice move if you want to have group rules. Goes without saying, everything is allowed for Network Admins ;)

All websites are categorized, not to mention anything can be over-written. For example, you can block a whole category, but allow certain websites. All websites are categorized manually and not by some algorithms. These updates can be downloaded. Some application are predefined, messenger, peer-to-peer file sharing, etc. You can block those, based on applications signatures or ports. This is all done for you. There is also, time block, allow messenger from 12 pm to 1 pm. If any website is block, the user is redirected to another page and the reason is specified. Bandwidth can be assigned. For example, if the amount of bandwidth exceeds a prefix number for a certain activity (application, web surfing), all is blocked and the reason is displayed, allocated bandwidth exceeded. I used this to measure the allocated bandwidth to us by our ISP.

Finally, the reporting feature. Well with the processor speed that I had, I only ran reports after disconnecting Websense. You can choose out of many reports and customize them. You can even delete information you don’t want to be included. Adult sites surfing habits!!

This is a quick run. But believe me try the software even if it is just for fun, it is worth it.

My religion, Islam

I’ve always believed there is a difference between people who were born Muslims and others who chose to be ones. Which one are you?

To me the latter are often stronger Muslims than the former.

Most of us who were born Muslims get our teachings from our parents, school, etc. Or that’s what it’s supposed to be. Most of our knowledge is what is given to us. Mimicking actions. We don’t actually go & search, further educate ourselves. Prepare for potential questions and inquires from non-Muslims who seek to become one or others who want to demolish and question the essence of our beliefs.

It saddens me, the way we practice our Islam here. I am not a religious person. I’ve a really long way to go. But there are basics one should not detour from and ignore. We don’t realize that our actions reflect directly on our religion, even if it’s not related what so ever.

Simply, praying (عماد الدين). Once we were in Starbucks and it was prayer time, so we prayed in one of their rooms

The sad thing is that all the rest of the coffee shop which was packed to its fullest, men & women, didn’t move. As if the man calling for the prayer (اذان) was just another unheard familiar ritual.

قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم: انما بعثت لاتمم مكارم الأخلاق

ان الظلم ظلمات يوم القيامة

How does this translate into our life routine? Think about it. They way we treat each other and other people. The way we behave like we were these untouchable superior beings.

I was taking a course and this Filipino woman was talking to me. She was surprised why we don’t have nude beaches, as her husband was about to take her swimming top off another Filipino told her it is not allowed here. Why isn’t allowed here was her question. Why don’t you eat pig meat or drink wine. She was saying that she attended a private party here in Kuwait and Kuwaiti-Muslim men were drinking & partying. So simply I said, in your religion, you must have rules and regulations you do not abide to or practice right, don’t you have to go to church or fast for a day for example. What you see doesn’t necessarily mean that this is our religion, our religion forbids all that. If you want to know more about Islam go and read about it from our books, how it is supposed to be not how it is right now.

My IELTS teacher once asked me. Do you think Islam is practised here? The way the girls are in malls. You know even in England girls don’t walk around like that. I am surprised that you don’t appreciate that Quran is written in Arabic which is your native language, I have to struggle to understand its meaning. Do you know that I teach basic Islamic teachings to Muslims. Finally he told me, he’s thinking of going back to England and becoming a (داعية)

Just some quotes to ponder:

“Al-Hamedellah Allah showed me Islam before HE showed me Muslims”

ذهبت للغرب فوجدت الاسلام و لم أجد المسلمين
ذهبت للشرق فوجدت المسلمين و لم أجد الاسلام

My attempt here is a daily struggle between myself & I. Maybe it is Ramadan but deep down I know it is not. Which kind of makes me happy. I do retain my basic Islamic practices and teachings all year long, but in this holy month I go the extra mile in hopes to redeem myself into becoming a better Muslim and keep it for a life time. Insha’Allah I succeed.

Is it OK to feel this way?

On Thursday I went and signed the new contract. During all this time I’ve had these mixed rollercoaster feelings.

Happy.
Excited.
Sad.
Back Stabber.
Eager.
Scared.
Restless.

I can write down all the feelings in world!!

I wonder what my supervisors will think. Will they be happy for me or feel like I went around their back? The only good thing about my current job that made me reluctant to leave is my supervisors. But to me this is not enough to keep me around.

When I weigh to myself the whys & why nots, I find I lean more to springing out and going on with my life & new job.

Perfect Scenario:

I’ve been offered a new job and I’ve accepted it.

Congrats!! *hugs & tears* ‘أهم شي ;) we’ll miss you so very much. There’s nobody like you. You’ve been the perfect employee, sorry we didn’t appreciate you more. They’re lucky to have you. If you want you can leave tomorrow.

Really. Thanks. Bye.

Worse Scenario:

I’ve been offered a new job and I’ve accepted it.

Hmmmm back stabber. No your resignation is unaccepted. Now here’s what you have to do for the next 50 years or so.

I really like to stop at that. Nevertheless, Insha’Allah I am going to tell them on Sunday, hmmm I do have a lot to do on that day, should it be on Monday? See what I mean. Can’t I just resign and leave a note :D

Sunday it is, we’ll see what happens. –Hope they’re not reading this-
