I used to think that Muslims are just not appreciating the religion that they were born into, but I soon realized that they're not the ones to blame for this. Well, at least not all of them.

You see, Muslims are being *taught* to focus on performing rituals not because these rituals have any meaning (most scholars don't deal with the meanings of rituals, such as prayer and pilgrimage), but because they *obliged* to perform them.

This approach isn't compatible with human nature. Humans (or healthy ones, at least) need to know *why* they are doing what they're doing and to form a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of their lives. When Islam is reduced to rituals, or when Muslims don't have the right understanding of Islam, then its values won't manifest in their conduct.

I remember before going on the pilgrimage, we met up with the scholar who was going to join us. He gave an overview of the rituals involved in the pilgrimage. When somebody asked what the spiritual/symbolic meanings behind the rituals were, he said: "This is a huge topic that I can't go into now."

And he never went into it.

There's more to mention about this issue, but I don't want the length of my comment to compete with the length of your post! :P

It’s so terrible that Muslims are not able to appreciate the great fortune that they’ve been given for being born a Muslim and in a Muslim country where they can practice it freely, religion really what regulates your life and creates a meaning and adds sense to it, and some how people attitude towards Islam here is either, taking it for granted, as if it’s just about worshipping or defying it as if they are not Muslims, all what I got from school was, answer this question:
Why god created us?
- to worship God
- ta3mier el universe
Islam gives you teaching that convert you to a human, it’s a true treasure and inner peace that nothing can substituted for

Shame that they walk around calling themselves Muslims without knowing the essence of it, I still believe that the true practice of Islam is in mo3amalah and a’7lag, if all could do that the understanding of this religion would flow in and would settle
