Virtualization Thoughts

I am just starting to get my hands dirty with virtualisation, it’s a beauty. I remember using Microsoft’s Virtual PC product, the main thing I remember is the performance issue. Currently I am running Vmware 5.0 on a Duo Core 2.3 GHz 2GB RAM winxp OS machine and running three V-machines simultaneously is working super!

Once you setup a V-machine you prepare it for the OS of your choice and boot it from a CD, I thought they come with OS images but apparently they don’t -need to search on that-. After choosing the setting of your HD, memory, networks, etc. you can modify them once you powered off your V-machine and edit the setting by adding any component you want.

For convenience I like that I am able to drag anything from the host machine and drop it in the V-machine, kinda makes file sharing easier. Specify the memory utilization percentage.

So I have my company virtually running on my PC -who knows in the future it may become a reality ;D-

I got my DC, server, clients and now I am setting up the exchange. The thing is this is hard to setup and I am literally drooling to have my way with the new features I am about to configure so the debate between the reckless and sensible me begins, whether I should go LIVE 3ala 6ooool or behave myself and test first! It should be straight forward but then again what if it crashes. I think I should give testing environment a go. The more complex the system is, the more errors occur when setting it up virtually!!

The beauty of virtualization as a concept is that a physical host machine can run multiple virtual machines not aware of each other, that is each thinks it has it’s own dedicated hardware resources, so if you have a powerful machine and it is a waste to have one thing running but a risk to have another service running along side it … GO VIRTUAL … and it is fun for test -kidding myself- it is a MUST .. no more playing around with the real stuff before testing!!!

We’ll see how I wake up tomorrow, reckless or sensible ;P

Viruses

When getting infected with a virus the first thing is to restart in safe mode, because windows loads the minimal files to run. You can delete the virus files manually or you don’t have to do safe mode … depends of the situation

Disable windows’ restore point because it takes backup of everything including infected files and the virus engine cannot remove those

Most probably you have an idea of what you are dealing with, so check for unfamiliar processes running on your PC and kill them. Sometimes the virus disables functions, like task manager you can go about that with the registry editor (run -> regedit), just don’t play with those unless you read how to do it

Scan the whole PC and make sure the virus definition update is the latest

Check the process that run at startup (run -> msconfig), clear selected suspicious processes

Most virus files are hidden and inject themselves in root drives, system folders, temp folders, etc. In a windows explorer tools -> folder options -> view -> under hidden files and folders select show hidden files and folders. If this is disabled too or you have problems, again registry keys needs to be modified. How to do this in Vista, I have no idea ;p -still in denial that I’m using it!!-

Search the registry keys for the virus and delete the entries

Google the virus and you are bound to find a solution, what I listed is the common practices for cleaning viruses. of course, some are harder to clean than others. Also, the behaviour differs. Some do minimal harm, others well, you can kiss your PC goodbye!!

Embarrassment

Me& embarrassment, hehehe, I love to do it on stage

We have a problem and I admit it, I didn’t fully investigate it because I assumed it was their side

They have this girl, I like working with her, talking to her and she is smart masha’Allah and loooooooooooool at the email she sent … fashelatna!!!

It is funny how I’m laughing, I LIKE her a lot, it’s weird how much more I admired her … just a reminder that next time I should do my job before sending crappy stuff ;p

Now I am thinking about what to write her back … once I do the job of course … ‘GO GIRL’ comes to mind ;p

Is this a normal feeling?? Work is so much challenging like this ;D

Today’s Thoughts

Got out of work early today to make my appointment, I booked a facial in one of my favourite places Spa Time

I arrived at Muhallab and it was quite filled with … college kids … OK isn’t exam/project time, WTH are they doing around cruising and that was around 4 pm

I went quickly to the bathroom because I needed to pray and all the girls in front of the mirror makeup and stuff

As I went to Spa Time, you notice people walking around and then what I hate the most, old men following young girls. Isn’t enough that these young girls are crazy and gollable, chase your own age, someone needs to smack some sense into these kind of men

That got me to remember our university days, it was once in a blue moon that we found a day to dress up and look nice and if one did, that means it was her birthday -e7em e7em that was me-, wAllah min kan la khilq!!! bas today’s students, another thing!

I arrived at my earthly heaven and slowly began to forget the outside world, seriously if one needs to escape and have some relaxing time, this is the place to go. Such a nice relaxing atmosphere, I fell asleep during my facial!!! I need to book a massage this weekend ;D -greedy-

The weather was nice today, aham shay ina mafee DUST … which was refreshing, that weather brings one thing to mind ICE-CREAM. We found a nice place in Beda3, I forgot the name, the taste brings back sweet childhood memories … off I go to get me a scoop :D

The IT Crowd

itcrowdxstictch

My friend told me about this show and I downloaded the first episode, it was OK and I laughed because I can relate to some of the incidents that happen

It is about the IT in a company and a new manager who doesn’t know anything about IT is hired -ain’t that case always ;p-

It is so true, IT is not respected in any company, we are considered the dumb people who exist to make sure the messenger is working

I laughed when they always say, have you tried turning it off and on again?

I remember once an employee calling about his PC.

My monitor is black

OK, is the monitor & PC turned on??

I just went and came back and now the screen is black

AHA .. maybe it is on stand-by or hibernate, do you see any lights … the keyboard lights

where??

OK, just move the mouse or press any key

Nothing

is the PC on, the lights on the PC are they blinking

where

Do you hear the fans of the PC, is the PC making any sound

…..

OK just press the switch ON button

where .. nothing

Is the PC plugged in??

what ???

OK .. we’ll send someone

And I remember another incident where this lady calls complaining she has no Internet so I know her IP, so I said:

Let me just check if I can see you -meaning if you’re alive on the network-

what you can see me, where, where are the cameras, when did you install them

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA -that was mean-

I was just imagining her looking around searching for the cameras and I explained to her my point … maskeena .. yes we can be mean ;D

Memories, I am saying if anyone wants to make a Kuwaiti IT sitcom, contact me, I’ll provide the material and the incidents, even the goofy stuff, IT people do, like accidental shutting the whole department down ;P

Cont. WSUS

Created a winxp V-machine and joined it to the domain.

Now to configure the clients to get their updates from the WSUS, a new Group Policy Object (GPO) needs to be added since you are in AD. But if you are not deploying it, I think it can be done through modifying the registry or simply the local policies.

The DC is a fresh installation so I installed Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) or you can do it through management console and add snap-in (run -> mmc ), the first way is much neater.

Next I created a new GPO using GPMC, right click Group Policy Object and the name the new GPO, ex. WSUS. I only created on and applied it on the domain level but you can create multiple ones and link it to different Organizational Units (OU) depends on your organization structure and complexity.

Right click the newly created GPO and edit

Dive through computer configuration -> administrative templates -> windows components -> windows update and configure the following:

- Specify Intranet Microsoft Update Service Location
- Configure Automatic Updates
- Automatic Update Detection Frequency

wsusgpoe1

Link the GPO appropriately, right click whatever object you want and link existing GPO. That was one of my mistakes linked in the wrong place so not all object got the policy. You can force the new GPO by running (gpupdate /force) on the client side

gmc

OH and a nice feature that you can do on the WSUS server level -you can configure GPO to do that-, create groups and assign computers to them so you can push updates to selected groups. I am thinking of having a testing group to test the updates before pushing it to all others, it’ll include helpdesk and IT people and maybe a server group and the rest.

When synchronizing, WSUS will connect to Microsoft updates and download whatever you specify, don’t forget to configure that option (options -> synchronization options) all you’ll download a hell lot of updates you don’t need -yeah another mistake from my side-

You can go through the updates and approve and select the group to install to. Also, the web management gives you details about what’s going on and which computers needs updates and what is installed, pretty decent.

Hmmm, I think that’s about it. I’m not sure if I am missing something but here is the link from Microsoft WSUS 3.0

If you think something is not right or I may have forgot something, please don’t hesitate to correct me ;)

Now I am formatting an IBM and since I am lazy I don’t have server OS image, so I have to do everything from scratch and also configure the RAID for the disks … that part NOT fun at all …

One thing down … trillion more to go …. ;D

The final thing:

wsus3

Firefox 3

First thing morning, I downloaded firefox, seeing many features and loving it. Frankly I can feel the performance better, especially I’ve been having performance problems with firefox 2 lately

Give it a try:download

They have an Arabic version, I wonder how that is and the menus, don’t think I’ll like it, maybe I’ll give it a try

Update:

In addition to my previous firefox experience

I am liking the searching feature, in the URL bar, whenever you are typing, it searches through your browsing history, both the website title and URL, NICE …
