LDP: Active Directory Manangement Tool

This is one amazing tool! So I’ve been dealing with Microsoft Infrastructure for about 1.5 years now and kind of figuring out my way as I go along ;P

If you deploy LDAP directory such as Microsoft Active Directory, this GUI tool helps you navigate through your AD configuration and display details, which is quite helpful!

Especially if you need to run AD information against any programmed application/forms.

Have you ever used Microsoft Infopath to create forms and created a data connection to your AD? When inserting fields and controls, you can include AD object attributes to be fetched or compared. Which is automatically retrieved and you just have to select your choice but what if you want to configure non-Microsoft product or an in-house developed application that integrates with your LDAP directory.

If the management tool is installed on your Domain Controller that runs your AD services, go to Start -> Run -> LDP

One more thing, you can only run this shortcut, if the path where LDP.exe is stored is included in the PATH environment variable, to check you can go to:

Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Environment Variables -> In the System Variables scroll down to Path and include the path where ldp.exe is installed (ex. C:\Program Files\Support Tools) if it’s not there.

After running the tool, Connect to your server running AD and then bind using user with enough administrative privileges.

connect

bind

To view the detailed tree of your AD, go to View -> Tree and fill out your BaseDN and click OK. All the details will be displayed on the left pane, click on any result and it’s details and attributes will be displayed on the right pane.

tree

from the details, you can get the object’s attributes, see below image

There is ALOT more you can do with this tool, this is just to get you going :)

Just Thoughts

If you ask me now, if I see myself in IT forever, I can’t say YES!!

Maybe in a different place a different speciality, but for now, I just feel completely lost!

I list my potential future job prospects, yes one needs to provide for oneself, I have my chef possibility ;P and recently added skier, like snowboarding or sandboarding, though I think I’ll faint half way from the heat.

I remember the today’s silly requests from our dear users that tick me completely off, one wants us to unlock PDF documents so he can print them out! Even with legal hanging over our heads and another doesn’t want to install Microsoft updates, so I say, “of course we’ll call Microsoft themselves and request that they stop pushing out their updates to the rest of the world!!!! so you sir, can avoid the hassle of installing and restarting your PC.”

I can’t deny that what I do, affects my mood completely, I just get out of there drained to the last bit! I think about happiness and imagine, what I need to be doing to achieve just that!

Is something wrong with me??? Is it my job ??? The people I deal with ??? Do I need to change ??? Do I need to change path!

I’m good at what I do. But am I doing it wrong?

Even if I come in and leave on time, it’s what happens during these hours that gets stuck! It’s not easy being NOT affected!

I’m loosing my memory, I can’t remember a thing and of course my eye sight! pathetic! 6ab3an I have NO time to go do checkups, because I leave work and I’m so out of energy that I just drive 80km/hr to reach home, too tired to push the gas peddle! I wanted to go relax in Avenues today, sip some coffee or have a bite! couldn’t do that.

People tell me to relax and take it easy, it’s not the job, I enjoy IT, it’s the people I don’t like dealing with. I take it all in. It’s hard for me to know something and not do anything about it! I hate it when I see my colleagues stab each other in the back, even if I’m out of it, it affects me. WTF, is wrong with human nature!

I think everyone is born with a tolerance capacity, I believe I’ve overflow mine because I’ve been doing that since childhood that now I’m this tic toc human bomb!

In a meeting today, I actually imagined going over to a guy, grabbing him by the collar and throwing him out of the window! Then thought, do these window open? hmmm, can I break them with a chair. hold it hold it, stay girl stay ;P

If you see me, you can’t imagine I carry all this inside me, I smile, laugh and nod.

Maybe I need a break from it all, but we have several projects going on that I need to be there and then maybe, but I need to go to somewhere and not stay home and it has to be technology-free zone. Believe me, do all IT people do that, as soon as I go in somewhere, I notice their setup, where is the computer room here, aha the cabling, APs hmmm, telephony system, yes IP, Cisco also, and on and on I freaking GO!!!

Maybe I’m too concentrated on my job, I’m too  lazy to go find something to do after work, like maybe volunteering some place. Do we have such a thing here ??? So if someone has a non-IT related job for me after my working hours, I’ll even do it for free ;D

I know what I need to do, is LET GO, but it’s hard, how can one do that! I can’t just switch my input system off when I go into work and switch right back on as soon as I get out.

If we were allowed to drink, I’d be one drunken chick all the time hehehehehe! Isn’t that how they forget ;P

Tomorrow some innocence will be shed upon me, I’m baby sitting my niece, that makes me happy. So the day after tomorrow definitely I’ll be doing something different to my day, other than home-work-home scenario on each and every weekday!

Fiber Specs

We’re about to buy a Cisco Firewall and we need fiber ports as interfaces, the technical Cisco product guy, asked what are the Fiber specifications you want?

I asked what do you mean? Don’t we just need a firewall with SPF SFP interface? – I sometimes make that mistake ;P -

He said, well type of fiber you are using and connectors.

Isn’t all the fiber used for long distance is single mode, and our fiber is terminated on LC connectors, so this is what you need right?

Well, no we need more information.

Really, like what kind?

I’m not sure, I’ll ask our other technical guy, he’s more into fiber specifications and I’ll get back to you.

Ok!

I’m still waiting for their feedback actually. What I know about fiber in general, is there are two type, single mode and multi mode. Single mode is for long distance and more expensive. Multi mode is for shorter distance and cheaper. Each has it hardware to support it. You can’t link a multi-mode to single-mode fiber without having some kind of transceiver to convert the signal. The type that they pull from the nearest exchange to buildings is single mode and if you want to pull fiber within your premises, across floors or between close buildings, you’ll use multi mode.

I’ve never seen a fiber mode convertor, but I hear they are very expensive, what they’ll do actually is have two transceivers, single mode to ethernet and multi mode to ethernet, so they’ll connect the single-mode to the first transceiver and connect the multi-mode fiber to the second transceiver and have an ethernet cable between them. From a network point of view, two points of failure! From a sales point of view, cost saving.

Check your WAN connection, are you utilizing fiber, leased lines, wireless, satellite. If you are using fiber, how is it connected to your router, is it direct or through a transceiver. If it is the first one, then your router is with a fiber interface module plugged which is more expensive then having a fast/giga-ethernet interface and having a transceiver in between.

Regarding the connectors, you know how long it took me to actually get them right, 1 year ;P ST round, SC square, MTRG big square, LC the small ones, I memorized them like that. Actually, I only used to mix up SC & ST.

Fiber cables, can come with the same connector terminated on both ends, LC-LC , or different type of connectors ST-SC. So maybe your fiber patch panel has ST connection and your switch interface has SC connection.

I’ve never dealt with Cisco firewall, so this would be interesting, firewalls all have the same concept, you just need to get familiar with how to manage it. The thing I know about Cisco, is every feature you need, you have to buy a separate product! Not all in within the same box. We’ll see what ours comes with.

DIC: Lunch Break

My course was at Dubai Internet City, I liked it so much I wish we had our own version! It is indeed a city, some building belong to a single company by itself, others shared by many companies, each taking as small as an office. They had these cafeterias on the ground floor of each building, on the first day, I picked up a sandwich but the place was crowded inside that I had no choice but to go outside and I’m so glad I did, because the weather was amazing and my lunch during my four day stay was nice too :)

Day 1:

Day 4:

I took lunch from the same restaurant, because the other options were Subway, Indian food and don’t remember the fourth. I’m hungry right now and going to sleep, that’s why this post ;)

Ungrateful Thoughts

It doesn’t make it right

when you ask about me day and night

Now that I carry myself on my own

You pretend you’ve been there and I wasn’t alone!

Weren’t you the one who started off

that I had to do it all … myself

I did not ask for your help

your guidance or advice

and when I refuse it all

you argue and get mad, not making sense at all!!

It doesn’t make it right

Because we no longer fight

I’m pretty sure

you’ll always be there

But when I truly need you

you’ll vanish into thin air

I hope you prove me wrong

Because I’m not that strong

I hide it all so well

in my deep dark bottomless well

I remember that one moment I held you  so tight and I let it all go

My high walled defences went down and  I let all my tears flow

But for now …

I’m telling YOU what I AM going to do

and by the way, these are all my own doings no thanks to YOU
