Dubai Roads
Posted by Bloggylife in family, personal on August 23, 2009

Driving is one thing, driving in Dubai is another and finally driving in Dubai with your mom next to you is a total other matter
The roads in Dubai are a bit complicated compared to the infrastructure we have here in Kuwait. If you miss a turn on a high way, khalas you lost your chance, it’s very hard to do a U-turn as we have here with our highway exits.
Even with a GPS stuck to the window shield, we got lost!! The GPS looses it sometimes and places us in weird locations
You’d see a sign giving a direction to a road, if you reach that road its name is different and then on the GPS it has a third name. Not to forgot the commercial maps we took from the hotel concierge, but believe it or not, we found Dubai Outlet Mall with that map with my sis directions
– family scores -
The GPS helped a lot, if it weren’t for it, I’d never drive there. Even their internal roads are being contructed, we found ourselves ending up in closed dark alleys!
If we can’t find our destination on the GPS we search for something near and go there and just manage from there.
When we got lost going to Outlet Mall, we found the Chinese Dragon Market so we went in
We also, came across Dubai Fabrics Market, Vegetable and Fruit Market, you see where I’m going with this
We rented a Toyota – Corolla for 90 Dirhams per day, I waived the extra insurance, and get this if you are 25 and below they won’t insure you
But since I’m 26 they allowed me to take their car. There is also an extra charge of 5 Dirhams everytime you pass their “Salik” bridges.
Driving in Dubai is less aggressive than here, people will actually let you pass, stop and make way and most importantly stand in line. Of course we saw the occasional road rage and madness but not compared to Kuwait drivers.
If I get another chance to drive there again, it’ll be with a fresh formatted brain, because I have no recollection of the roads and sites, that’s how messed up my mental road map of Dubai is, well I do remember Maktoum Bridge!
If you decide to go for a visit and want to drive, pack an updated GPS and prepare for getting lost
