Activating it by default, assuming friendship with any person you exchanged emails with, even your ex-spouse whom you exchanged with harsh emails would end up a friend in there. Also, they forced email alerts on you with no way out (no direct way that is). Despite me liking it after the few tweaks, I still say Google DID evil here. Lots of it.
