UK Thoughts

One thing that stands out in UK is the queue concept, it is like a religion here! It is so important, that even one person standing by themselves is a queue. You’d find places so tiny and cramped nevertheless there you find a “queue here” sign! It’ll wiggle left and right just to fit the 3 person queue that’ll most likely have in a busy day!

Most stores and business establishments will have an automated announcement system telling you which till to go to. That’s right another British word, till as in counter. “Till number 4 please”

I wanted to buy a hot liquid container, I did not know what it is called and that is exactly what I asked the store.

“You mean a flask”

“I’m not sure, is there a picture you can show me ” :P Ladies and Gentlemen, this is how you learn new words :D

It takes a while to understand the bus system here, how you order tickets, specify the location and ticket type. “Single to the train station please” or “Student return to city center please”. Along the bus there are stop buttons for you to push so that the driver stops at your destination. See if no one is standing in a bus stop and no one in the bus pressed that button, the bus will drive by. It is tricky, but for first timers if you are totally lost, the bus driver will be happy to help and gives you heads up when you get to your stop or stare at you displeased because you pressed the button for the wrong bus stop! “Sorry my mistake” :P

“Whereabouts are you?” Just the British way to say “Where are you?” or simply “وينك” I’m always comparing :P Just as they say “I’ll ring you” as opposed to “I’ll call you”.

How come the last position has “ID 7″ when they are eight of them!!!

??? What’s the problem? They are eight!

But the last one’s ID is 7!!!

I’m not sure what you are trying to say? What’s the problem ??

HUH! Eight positions, where is ID 8! 1, 2, …, 8

That’s where you are wrong, eight positions, 0, 1, 2, …, 7

In which world do you count from 0 !!!!!!

My world 0_0

IT Support

I popped in my neighbour’s room the other day and her guest was having problems with her laptop. So I said: “You can give it to me sometime and I’ll take a look at it for you”.

This went by until my neighbour called saying she is having problems herself, her laptop loads forever at starting up.

I took a look at it and it turns out she installed two anti-virus programs, removed both and installed AVG for her, since I am happy with mine :P

Next day another one calls my room to make an appointment :P , she’s facing a problem with her laptop. I thought, I guess the word got out :P

This one’s problem was rather funny, I don’t know what she was fooling around with but she had a malicious software that kept changing her DNS settings, cleaned that up and there you go. It rather took sometime, by the end of the night she was tired and I was fired up :P I had to remove viruses manually and told her, that I had to Google certain processes and information to make sure they are legitimate and taught her how to remove programs and not have everything run at start-up!

I guess wherever you go, you end up being the IT support of your location :P

Some were afraid that I was getting annoyed by their questions. What is a DNS? Can I have two Anti-virus programs? Do I need an Anti-Virus?

I announced: “Don’t worry, this is part of what I do for a living” :D

Book: The Lovely Bones

On her way home from school on a snowy December day in 1973, 14-year-old Susie Salmon (“like the fish”) is lured into a makeshift underground den in a cornfield and brutally raped and murdered, the latest victim of a serial killer–the man she knew as her neighbor, Mr. Harvey.

This is one of my February books. I started reading it on a train and that was a mistake! I got so emotional as I was reading the murder scene, I got chocked up and my eyes filled up!

It was a lovely beautiful novel, that follows the lives of the family and friends of Susie after she is brutally murdered and how they cope and move on. You have to keep an open mind about how heaven and the after life is portrayed in this novel.

I highly recommend reading the novel and it is not at all how you expect it to be, it is refreshing.

My Night Out

In celebration of a major milestone, the end of the 2nd term, all of my class went out to dinner.

Last time we went out, was on Chinese New Year, we went to a Chinese restaurant and anyone who was not Chinese was not allowed to pay. So this time the rest of us invited the others for a night out.

I had so much fun, I was relaxed, laughed, ate good food, enjoyed conversation, the diversity is so amazing and enjoyable.

I’ve met a lot of people from around the world.

The Chinese are so amazing, they are very polite and tentative. In any meal gathering, they have to give a speech in the beginning stating the purpose and welcoming others and at the end thanking everyone. It is so nice :)

We laughed, we teased, we took loads of pictures! In the most relaxing atmosphere ever, you can clap, give a speech, flash camera lights and no other table will look at your way.

As we were heading back, it started to drizzle … PERFECT :)

Tonight was a good night ;)

Most Probably

In Kuwait:

2:30 AM, someone screaming wakes you up, quick get out of bed, maybe carry a heavy object and investigate … someone is in trouble and may need some help.

In UK:

2:30 AM, someone screaming wakes you up, lift your head, listen carefully, mutter to yourself “DAMN, those drunks!” and try to go back to sleep! … Someone is just having a little too much fun under your room window … most probably…
