Program Language Spaghetti

I don’t mean the coding itself.

I’m taking so far, C language, Java language, VHDL and MATLAB.

I haven’t programmed for a while and I’ve never took MATLAB.

So now the syntax of each programming language is overlapping the others, well it went a little bit further to include the functions as well :P

In the Java lab, my partner and I, starting debugging a code we just wrote …

“Let’s put in a printf to see if it actually calls the function”

“OK”

“hmmmm, error … wait that’s in C!!!”

“OH, you made that mistake, I’m writing down that you’re telling me”

“Seriously MAN, it’s MY mistake … well I’m not to blame … too many things mixed together!”

Sometimes, I get out of a C language course to attend a Java lab and then attend a VHDL course!!!

Accommodation Tale

I’ve been going through loops with the bank here that I’ve opened an account with. It’s strange their banking services. It took me over 45 minutes to open an account and a couple of times to rectify my official papers, your entire name has to match what’s on the passport. If you write your family name with a ‘-’ and it’s not like that on the passport, then you should start taking it off when writing down your name on official papers.

After opening the account and setting my online access, which not surprisingly that I’ve forgotten the password to :P , because I couldn’t use any combination I knew, it was according to criteria they’ve set, I should’ve written it down :P Anyway, after finalizing the paper work, I was told, I’ll receive everything by postal mail. Really! My account details and pin number first, then after some days my credit card.

As it happens, the day I was suppose to receive my mail, the postal service here in UK went on strike!! Just my luck. I wouldn’t have minded at all, if it weren’t for my accommodation fees, which were due on the 24th this month.

Going back and forth and then giving up, surrendering to the fact that I’ll be charged with a late fine. I’ve sent an email on the 23rd to the accommodation office. But didn’t get a reply.

Dears,

I live on campus and I am aware that I need to pay my fees shortly. I have gone to the bank to open an account a week ago but unfortunately my bank card has not been delivered yet. The account personnel stated there might be a delay because the postal service might go on strike. I was told that I can transfer the money to the accommodation account if I can go to the bank personally.

Is it possible to get an extension, at least until I get my bank issue sorted out, hopefully by next week. I want to know what my options are?

Regards,

Great! Have to wait till Monday and sort it out, conclusion, I needed to go to another office to ask for a deadline extension, but fortunately the deadline for this payment is this Friday, but I thought I’ll ask for an extension anyway, who knows what’ll happen.

I got back to my room and checked my email

Dear,

I have extended the due date until the 9th November which I hope is helpful.

Yours sincerely

I was WOWed, seriously! I thought I was being ridiculous asking for an extension over the email but it worked YAY :D

“الحمدالله” so that gives me two more weeks, the bank lady told me to wait three working days for my card, when I went to see them on Saturday. So I’ll check with them on Thursday morning insha’Allah if this drama isn’t resolved yet.

The obvious solution would be, can I come in and pick my card?

NO, for security reasons we mail them to you

I didn’t understand the security part in the snail mail method compared to me showing up personally with my passport as identification to pick it up!!!

Dear Maryem,
I have extended the due date until the 9th November which I hope is helpful.
Yours sincerely

Fire Alarm!

It’s about 1AM in the morning here and they decided to have a fire alarm test! Even if you were deaf, your hearing sense will come back! The alarm is located in each room exactly in the middle of the ceiling.

I tried to ignore it, then thought maybe it’s for real, let me check what the others are doing.

I’m in my PJs, I put a coat over me and wore my “lafa” and my trainning shoes and stood in the corridor, then doors began to open. I asked is this for real? We all gathered it was a testing fire drill.

So we headed out and as I was standing this girl asks me where I’m from and it turns out she is from Oman and lives couple of doors ahead. So I made a new friend.

Now all I have to do is figure out a way to go back to sleep with all this heat I’m feeling! I can’t open the windows because yesterday drunk kids woke me up at 2.30AM! And we don’t have an A/C to turn on xo what to do???

My lectures start 9.15 AM, all I’m sure of is, I need a big cup of coffee to kick start my day.

My Dreams

I had a dream, I’m at my old job :P They moved me in a big office, with a bathroom inside, two PCs though I already had those, and two TVs :P It was a nice room …

Why all this now? I’m leaving … I said

This is just to make you comfortable, stay here until it’s time for you to go …

I thought, it’s not a scheme to make me stay is it, because I’m already gone :)

What do you think … this …

Happy Birthday to Moi

27I’m not really sensitive about how old I am. I always used to add a year to my actual age, madree laish, but the only time I got my age exactly when someone asked me, was when I turned 25, you can’t mess that up! other than that I have to think for a second, how old am I.

I’m 27 years old today :)

Is there something special I’m going to do, don’t think so, especially since I’m away. What I’m going to do tomorrow, go to the city and walk around perhaps. Unpack and sort my things out.

My Accommodation

luggage

I moved to the university campus, I didn’t meet any postgraduate students, all are undergraduates, 1st and 2nd year. I talked to this Nigerian girl. She is hilarious and loud. She asked me if I were planning to stay in UK after I’m done as if that was an option and she said: “Look how fast you said NO, you made up your mind”.

I stood behind three Asians and an Indian and then he says that he was accepted to many universities, “of course they accept us, we are good, we have to be, we are Asians”

ROFL, doesn’t it sound like a bumper sticker …

“we are awesome, we have to be, we are …. ” -insert into dotted line- :P

Then I realized, YUP, I’m from the same continent, take a step back, back away from the Asians.

I got this apartment by a miracle, everything is gone, no apartments near the university, everything is far and then this clears out and I was planning to see it before taking it, but dad said just take it and it’s in the campus and he wanted this all along but I wanted someplace away! Now he keeps reminding me that I was going to let this property get away! He’s got a point, it’s very nice and close to the university. I know he’ll go back home and tell everyone I was going to pass on this great apartment, but he convinced me otherwise, fa6fooo6 prepare yourself and do tell when he does that :P

WTH was I thinking

Let me just start off with saying my life will be a hell lot easier if I were less stubborn, if I just settled down,  if I didn’t put my brain and emotions in everything I do and believe in. If I didn’t question every damn thing. Madree, maybe not! Too much nonsense ??

Anyway, don’t they say third time is the charm, which I highly doubt it in my case!

YUP, I quit my job and decided to continue my studies! Do I want to go all the way, I’m not sure yet. An opportunity came along and I took it – it wasn’t easy at all :’( – It was a journey that I don’t have the energy or the mind set to talk about it, let me just give you about the end or is it the beginning!

The day I was supposed to fly, of course the flight was overbooked and there was no place for us.

The next day we hopped onto the flight and when reaching London there weren’t any places for the air-plane to land, so we went circles into the cloud which was amazing :P As I was joking to dad, now the pilot will announce we’ll head back to Kuwait :P See pictures I took below :)

Apparently there’s a difference between underground and trains, I’m not entirely sure they call it a train!  Oh, wait, it’s called the railway. It’s not a taxi, it’s a cab and then you have the buses with different colours!!

We had to carry our luggage by hand from underground across stairs up and down and then heading to the railway. This African guy sits next to me nudging me with his elbow while the white people kept away :P I guess we scare them.

What I’m thinking right now, I want to go back :( Really, back to my miserable partition working my ass off, so what I was not happy, I was being paid, right? but I know I’m getting this feeling because I’m on unfamiliar ground.

I hate to admit it, but I’m quiet sensitive right now and I don’t need negative feedback :) I have a plan, I hope all my worries will be settled within maximum 4 weeks.

Why am I blogging, well I’m in the hotel with free fast Internet :P But VoIP sucks big time or is it the application I’m using :P Sky.com page isn’t blocked as it is back home. Like that is stopping people from getting it (download.com) :P

For rainy days, well indeed it’s raining :) But till now I’m wearing my summer clothes, still it’s not that cold. There’s nothing here, unless I can be killed from viewing too much green :P It’s nature all over. Nah just kidding, the wet grass and leaves reminds me of my childhood.

Whether I make it or not, I’ll look back at this and hopefully smile at my crazy self and perhaps a slap on the back of my head, WTH were you thinking!

My Turn Ons

I had so much fun reading Nosayba‘s posts, Being a Woman is a Malady, Part 1 and Part 2. Same as mentioned in her post, you can’t imagine how conversations that start with a topic ends with “why aren’t you married”. Once I was talking to someone about all shops having sale and it just went to discuss my single status!!!

As advised to Nosayba, “The quality of proposing men is indirectly proportional to time you know” :P , here’s my weird picky turn ons:

  • Men who wear their seat belts while driving. To me it says so much :) If anyone shares this with me, I’m starting a fan club :P
  • Men with their own ideas and beliefs are so attractive, physical appearances attract but wears off especially if the person is a jerk. He has his own mind set and conclusions, doesn’t give a crap about what others think, as along as he believes in what he’s doing and saying.
  • Not to disregard physical appearances, but according to my friends, I’m attracted to square men :P
  • I just discovered this, but this guy who’s a developer comes to our company, stands in front of the computer places his hands on the keyboard and I was just shooting away my questions and then realized he’s not touching the mouse. All his interaction with the system was only via keyboard strokes. Alt+tab this, F4 that, opens a notepad and starts coding, I was memorized, I thought OK that’s creepy, but to me it was amazing :)

Most women just want to get married, perhaps concentrating on the guy’s family qualities. Most men concentrate on women’s appearances, family and other qualities. But not all of them, as my big brother put it, “مابي وحدة غبية”, “I don’t want a stupid woman” :P

I guess whether you are single or married, you can share your thoughts. What does it for you or what you like about your partner.

PS: To creepy people, this isn’t an attempt to advertise my single status nor attract proposals.

Dubai Roads

mban2527l

Driving is one thing, driving in Dubai is another and finally driving in Dubai with your mom next to you is a total other matter :P

The roads in Dubai are a bit complicated compared to the infrastructure we have here in Kuwait. If you miss a turn on a high way, khalas you lost your chance, it’s very hard to do a U-turn as we have here with our highway exits.

Even with a GPS stuck to the window shield, we got lost!! The GPS looses it sometimes and places us in weird locations :P

You’d see a sign giving a direction to a road, if you reach that road its name is different and then on the GPS it has a third name. Not to forgot the commercial maps we took from the hotel concierge, but believe it or not, we found Dubai Outlet Mall with that map with my sis directions :) – family scores -

The GPS helped a lot, if it weren’t for it, I’d never drive there. Even their internal roads are being contructed, we found ourselves ending up in closed dark alleys!

If we can’t find our destination on the GPS we search for something near and go there and just manage from there.

When we got lost going to Outlet Mall, we found the Chinese Dragon Market so we went in :P We also, came across Dubai Fabrics Market, Vegetable and Fruit Market, you see where I’m going with this :D

We rented a Toyota – Corolla for 90 Dirhams per day, I waived the extra insurance, and get this if you are 25 and below they won’t insure you :P But since I’m 26 they allowed me to take their car. There is also an extra charge of 5 Dirhams everytime you pass their “Salik” bridges.

Driving in Dubai is less aggressive than here, people will actually let you pass, stop and make way and most importantly stand in line. Of course we saw the occasional road rage and madness but not compared to Kuwait drivers.

If I get another chance to drive there again, it’ll be with a fresh formatted brain, because I have no recollection of the roads and sites, that’s how messed up my mental road map of Dubai is, well I do remember Maktoum Bridge!

If you decide to go for a visit and want to drive, pack an updated GPS and prepare for getting lost ;)

Mini Vacation

Took a small break with the family and headed to Dubai. I’m so glad we did this trip. I got confused about Ramadan and thought it might be Saturday/Sunday so I scheduled our return Friday, good thing that Ramadan is tomorrow :)

It wasn’t crowded and the weather was bearable, it’s always a good deal to just leave everything behind and take some time off.

I’ll be posting about that trip and driving on crazy under construction roads. We got lost a lot ;P but it was FUN and frustrating at the same time because my two brothers don’t know when it’s time to just shut up.

We managed to pass “Salik” bridges 18 times, if you use them, you need to pay a fee! I thought I should charge them for having such messy roads and no clear signs!!!

So Ramadan is here and everytime, I feel the same, that I’m not ready! And I feel the same way when it’s about to end, that I’m not ready for it to finish. I’m not sure what the feeling is about and how to get the “ready” vibe on ;P

One thing I hate about Ramadan is how people relate to food, you would think people will consume less but it’s the opposite. My mom always thinks that the most appropriate time to ask for “Laban” is to ask me as I’m heading back from work or before “futoor” and I have to drive like crazy! The co-ops always seem to be full and I feel like I’m the only one standing there with my “Laban” for “futoor” and mini cornflakes for “so7oor”.

We are one of the families who have many options on the first day only “أمي تكون شادة حيلها” then it’s soup – prayer – main dish scenario.

Driving is another thing, remember “Better late than never”. If you don’t want to live, it’s your own life and there are many ways to take it, just don’t drag another innocent one with you!!!

ohhhhh and the BIG thing is me going through caffeine withdrawal x( ouch … I think it’ll take me a week to be fully must-have-coffee-in-the-morning FREE

Mubarak 3alakom el-shahar :D
