Work Thoughts
Posted by Bloggylife in work on December 16, 2008
As I walked into the gym this song comes up, it’s like it was speaking to me. Of course my job doesn’t come near the serious hard working individuals, and I do get a nice salary but it sure is exhausting … I’m just wondering if it is worth it!!!
This is for all women/men who really work hard for their money
Centralizing Server Logs
Posted by Bloggylife in technology, windows, work on December 14, 2008
I came across this event management software EventTracker
It’s a solution to centralize all logs which I got from this article
There was another article, talking about utilizing Linux box to do the job
I’m not sure how to go about this, having zero knowledge about Linux. OK, does this OS come with an application that sorts out all the servers logs and events and manage them into a nice interface and reports! I’ll have to discover that
For now, I installed EventTracker on win2003 OS. You can add servers from the domain, it’s installs agents to retrieve the logs, you can configure it as agent-less but of course you won’t have all the features, I guess it’ll go with what SNMP provides which isn’t the whole purpose of my aim! Or maybe another approach, I’m still going through it.
Also, I have to enable more logging on the servers I added, not just user login/logoff events ;P that sort of thing. For example, on the file level, files added/modified/deleted.
You would thing there are many options out there, but I’ve searched a lot and the amount of info I’m collecting is very scarce, how are others centralizing their logs ???
And this product is quiet expensive! Need to explore more … we’ll see about the Linux thing
LOL, I found this in the second article, it’s pretty funny and well true
“But the truth is that admins typically don’t log routers and switches. When a problem occurs, we just reboot them or restart an interface, and then chalk it up to a hardware glitch.”
To be continued …
IT Reasons
Posted by Bloggylife in funny, work on November 28, 2008
When shutting down the server, you’re asked to provide the reason…
Event: Planned
Reason:
power shitdown
power shotdown
power shutdown
LOL, I had to correct it each time, good thing I noticed it or else it would’ve gone into the events records!
The mind has its terrible ways ;D
Testing

My personal email, my testing email
I send back and forth between my work email and my personal gmail. Not for personal use but for work, test emails
You have all kind of email problems and I kind of established this test technique where I send myself an email from either account to test the send/receive status. And with time, I started including the time because we faced delayed emails problem a while back! So you would notice numbers in the subject field, that’s the time
First it was neat, including the AM/PM part, then all numbers and sometimes by mistake I include characters or symbols. And to refresh the atmosphere a bit, I sometimes include a message:
It’s me again, test message
Testing, I know you wana kill yourself!
Good morning, how are you doing today
I have a folder for testing attachments, with various sizes, just pick the size I roughly want and send away
We have to work with what we got!
Karma

KARMA can be a bitch
Each action has a reaction and today was so exhausting!
I feel like crying
I believe it’s not totally over, which is overwhelming me
OMG, the shit that happened today
I need a HUG

اهييييه Thoughts

What I need is someone “يدوس على راسي”
Seriously I can be sooo damn mean
We’ve been waiting for the installation to finalize for over two weeks and I am waiting for the expert and he shows up with what … papers in hand .. OK never mind …
So I tell him the problems and he sits and telnets the server and says … Aha, port 80 is blocked
Me speechless .. what came to mind was this Egyptian reply “اهييييه” LOL
MAN, first you are telneting without specifying the port so you are using 23 and second if 80 is blocked how are you browsing the website hosted there!!!
It is my conclusion, that they think all Network Administrators are idiots!
“Yes you should see a pop window” and I say “I can’t” and the reply “hmmm why ??”
Piece of advice to see what is going on with your PC always check your event viewer, if any application is being pushed to your workstation check the application events and also check the security events because whatever needs remote installation must have a high security level access and you can see the login failure or success attempts and this was the case, “please update the account name to administrator and not admin” and he replies “NO it’s admin”, WTF who is handling the network you or me, “we don’t have such user!!! Admin is locally to the web management it has nothing to do with the domain” … “Ahhhh” …
I told them, it is either I am not getting it or he’s not convincing me! So I wrote down what I want and gave it to him and he said he’ll continue tomorrow … !!! Tomorrow is fully packed, link test, presentation –which I am afraid I’ll screw up because I was not nice today- and this and finally I was planning to leave early to carry out some personal assignments … we’ll see how all goes down
I am looking into deploying installation packages across with policies. Need to manage that …

In IT there are the solutions that make sense and there are the ones that don’t!!
In case of solutions that don’t make sense, there are the ones that don’t make sense and the ones that don’t make sense totally!! For example, if a server has problems and one solves it by kicking the hard disk that’s a solution that doesn’t make sense but worked and if someone says they solved it by turning the monitor off and on, that doesn’t make sense totally … get it …
So yesterday’s problem got solved, it took me all day. You know when you always say this is the last thing I am going to do and yet you try another and another … and hours go by … There are situations I’d like to say the server is ‘mashee 3ala el-baraka’ aka temporary solution
‘كسرت خاطر نفسي اليوم’ because as I was rushing back home I look at my car’s clock and for a second was looking for ‘PM’ or ‘AM’ thinknig there is something wrong with it, see that can be a problem if servers don’t synchronize their clocks!! I think your job gets into you now and then
I had to solve it because if I didn’t I would be dreaming about it! I took my brother to dinner, I ate and ate, my tummy is FULL, I feel so sleepy, I need to take a shower but too tired to do so, postpone to morning, I VPN to work to make sure the problem is solved, now I can sleep and I know this is going to interfere with my dreams somehow … How can I stop all this ??

I am staring and Not giving up … NEVER …
Come on, give me a reason, just one more time … scarrrreeeed … and I’ll make you forget who YOU are … I will leave nothing of you to remember … Yallah … one last time … I have had enough of YOU …
In the server room challenging one of our applications, I am just itching to fry the thing … nothing is working to get it started. Anyway I lost first round, tomorrow is another day
I just kept staring at the monitor picturing my fist going through it, we could always use a brand new monitor, the server is intact, just break the monitor, send some shocking signals through it. Maybe I should tangle a bottle of cold water atop it, see if that works!
It gets to live to see another day, somethings are just stubborn and unreasonable, applies to all in this life and to computers, with Microsoft OS & applications, I guess that doubles the chances of screwups

Work Mobile
Posted by Bloggylife in work on July 13, 2008
Who likes their work mobile?? It’s one thing when it rings while you’re at work and when it does so when you’re off work … the latter scenario is more dramatic …
A couple of days I get an outside call but didn’t hear it because I was heading back from a meeting and rushing with the heat, as I wasn’t expecting any external calls and I was so damn busy to call back, I said if it is important they’ll call back and if it is business related, they’ll call the office, my email, my department, anything
See when it comes to unknown numbers, if it’s through my personal number, I have the choice to pick up or not and it won’t make a difference but if it is on the other line, work, even if a Martian is calling, I would pick up, “this is ….. from earth speaking”
That’s exactly what I did today and it turns out to be a lonely guy who won’t answer back but msging me … WTF … and as a professional I txt this is an official working mobile number and that doesn’t stop the creep! This isn’t the first time, I just ignore for a couple of days and eventually they’ll give up. Now everytime my mobile rings the message tone, most probably it that annoying person
My mistake when I got this number, I didn’t check if it was used before and as it turns out it was, so old acquaintances start calling and txt messaging and sometimes I feel sorry for them so I txt back that this isn’t the person they are looking for, so they would lookup that person and that person isn’t ignoring them
I like my work mobile to never ring or move, just lay there if I want to make a business call through it, but we can’t have all our wishes can we ???
